Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program in Minnesota that provides earnings to those who are disabled, blind, over the age of 65 and with limited resources. If you are unable to work and provide for yourself, then you may be able to qualify for the SSI program. Because the SSI is funded by general tax revenues, it can be difficult to determine whether you or not you are eligible for this program.
If you believe that you qualify for social security benefits, then contact our experienced Minnesota social security disability lawyers today by filling out the form on the side of this page or phoning one of our office numbers.
Minnesota SSI Eligibility
In order to qualify for SSI you will need to demonstrate one of the following:
- That you are aged (65 or over)
- That you are blind
- That you are disabled
You will also need to:
- Have a limited income
- Have limited resources
- Be a US Citizen and resident
- Meet certain other restrictions
Social Security Disability Definitions
One of the most confusing aspects of social security disability is the term ‘disabled’. In general, children and adults are considered ‘disabled’ if:
- Their disability results in marked and severe functional limitations (in children) or results in the inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity (in adults)
- Have lasted, or can be expected to last, for a continuous 12 month period
- Or, their disability is expected to result in death
Entering an Institution on SSI
For many people who are disabled the option to enter an institution and gain additonal help may be considered. An institution includes any hospital, nursing home, jail, prison, halfway house, public emergency shelter or similar situation. If you do enter an institution, you will usually lose your SSI eligibility. If you are receiving SSI, it is your responsibility to tell Social Security immediately of your change of residency. If you are only planning on entering a medical institution for less than 90 days, however, then you may be eligible to keep your SSI benefits.
