Disability Earnings Test
One of the ways in which Social Security determines whether or not you are eligible for SSDI benefits is with an earnings test. There are two different tests performed:
- A ‘recent work test’ – Social Security requires that all applicants worked at least five out of the last ten years before they become disabled and are eligible for SSDI disability benefits
- A ‘duration of work test’ – Social Security requires that all applicants work for a certain period of time in their life. For people under the age of 27, this is 1 ½ years while people between the ages of 30 and 60 will need to have worked for an average of six years in order to qualify.
